Before meeting my Sunlad Family, I was just a provincial girl stepping into the bustling city of uncertainties, carrying nothing but a pocketful of dreams and a heart full of both hope and unease. As the eldest child of hardworking, parents who didn't have the chance to pursue a college education, I learned early in life what it meant to hustle and endure. The weight of responsibility on my shoulders always felt heavy, and pursuing college seemed like a beautiful, distant luxury that was beyond
our financial means.
Everything changed when the Sunlad Simpex Educational Scholarships Foundation Inc. entered my life. As a tangible manifestation of God's grace, the foundation completely redirected the course of my future.
Sunlad became far more than just a financial lifeline. They became my light, my guide and a family I'm so grateful to belong to. Because they provided me with a safety net, I was empowered to step out of my comfort zone and truly spread my wings. While navigating the overwhelming demands of college, I learned to be resourceful, but Sunlad' s unwavering support allowed me to look beyond survival and aim for true excellence. I eventually held the highest position in a university-based organization, working tirelessly not for recognition, but to honor the immense trust the foundation had invested in me. I wanted to prove that a Sunlad scholar does not just get by-we thrive, we excel.
Four years ago, I was just another face in the crowd, cheering loudly for the Sunlad graduates of that time. I vividly remember watching them receive medals. Looking up at them with eyes full of wonder, I asked myself, "Will a girl like me ever be able to stand where they stood?"
Today, my heart overflows with a profound sense of pride and gratitude. By God's grace, I am no longer just a girl watching from the sidelines. I am now a proud and deeply humbled graduate of West Visayas State University, finishing my degree as Magna Cum Laude. Standing tall with this honor brings me fulfilment, because it means I have officially become the first child in our family to be a college degree holder. I am living proof of the dreams my parents selflessly carried but could not realize for themselves.
This milestone is a victory I share entirely with the beautiful souls who believed in me from the very beginning. I am endlessly grateful to Ma'am Joanna Ladrido-Rojas and Sir Yan Rojas for seeing my potential when I was still trying to find it myself. Ma'am Joanna's challenging words during my final interview rekindled a fire within me to maintain my scholarship and protect the foundation's trust, and I pray that my four-year journey has brought joy to her heart and proven that investing in me was a decision she will never regret.
Though my days of submitting monthly narrative reports and attending regular scholar gatherings may be coming to a close, my journey with the foundation is far from over. I can say with absolute certainty that the path would never have been as excellent, as meaningful, or as purposeful without the privilege of being a Sunlad scholar.

Years before entering college, I mentally prepared myself to choose a low-cost program and to study at an institution where I would only spend less, whether on tuition or my allowance. I was also prepared for the possibility that I may have to take a break from school when my brother and sister entered college, too. Luckily, these thoughts never turned into reality when Sunlad Simpex Educational Scholarships Foundation came to our family. The foundation became the beacon of light to us, allowing me to reach greater heights.
As much as I enjoy studying and learning, my college journey was never simple. I experienced countless breakdowns, uncertainties, moments of self-doubt, and dealing with the pressure from the people around me. There were times when I was burned out that I thought of giving up, but the support and trust of Sunlad, my family, and friends made me realize that giving up should never be an option. Their support enabled me to persevere and pursue my goals.
The foundation did not just aid us financially; it made me dream and hope again that education and achievements can also be received by those of us less privileged. Due to financial challenges, I was unable to participate in competitions and events years ago, which would have greatly improved my grades and opened doors for me. With Sunlad, it never occurred again. I was able to fully enjoy my college experience and concentrate on my studies without being concerned about finances.
SUNLAD is more than simply a foundation that supported us; it has become our family's drive and inspiration to keep going, dreaming, and doing our best at all times. My family and I would be forever grateful to Sunlad for the opportunity they have given me to be a recipient of their scholarship. It was an opportunity that made me achieve countless things I never thought I could achieve.

Honestly, I do not know how to start this letter. No amount of awards, achievements, or graduation speeches could ever prepare me for the feeling of finally reaching this moment. A few weeks ago, I was still a college student worrying about exams, deadlines, and requirements. Today, I have already graduated, earned my degree, and started a new chapter of my life.
It still feels strange not having to go back to school, aside from processing a few documents here and there. It still feels new having a degree. It still feels new being a "regular" passenger on public transportation. Everything feels surreal.
But if there is one thing I am certain of, it is this: my heart is full of gratitude for all the people who believed in me and supported me throughout my college journey.
Looking back now, everything I went through was worth it.
To be honest, I entered college as a simple girl expecting a simple college life. I thought all I had to do was study because I had always heard that our program was really, really, really hard. I entered a program where we were required to maintain a specific grade, and once we failed, there was no turning back. I entered college carrying so many fears. I was afraid of not surviving the program. I was afraid of losing my scholarship. I was afraid of not having the college experience I had always imagined. Despite all those fears, I was ready to take on the challenge.
Thankfully, I did not have to face that journey alone.
I entered college with people who believed in me and supported me. I had amazing people who walked with me throughout my college life. They celebrated my victories, encouraged me during my struggles, and reminded me to keep going whenever things became difficult. They made my college life not just bearable, but meaningful.
Many of you may already know that I graduated as one of the few Cum Laudes in our university. I also had the privilege of serving as the President of the entire Accountancy Student Body. I was a consistent Gawad Agustino Awardee for Academics, consistent among the Top 5 Dean's Lister, and eventually, the Class Valedictorian of our department.
I will not mention all my achievements one by one, but one thing is for sure-none of these would have been possible without you, my very first college family.
And anyway, this letter is not about my achievements. It is about the people behind them.
You may not believe me, but I am actually an introverted person. Before college, I spent most of my life at home. I was not fond of going out, and I was never the type of person who easily made new friends.
Yet somehow, I found people who made me feel seen, valued, and loved.
Aside from my own family, I was blessed with people who walked beside me throughout my journey. These people turned an ordinary college experience into something unforgettable. They made this simple girl one of the happiest people in the world.
First and foremost, I would like to thank our ever-beautiful Ma'am Joanna. I am beyond grateful to be one of the fortunate students who became part of the SUNLAD Family. I am Francis Biel Awing, a Political Science graduate from the University of Santo Tomas and a scholar of The Sunlad Simpex Educational Scholarships Foundation, Inc. The Foundation has helped me in more ways than one. Most importantly, it helped me achieve a lifelong dream shared by both myself and my family: the pursuit and completion of higher education. Through its support, what once seemed like a distant aspiration became an attainable reality.
Financially, the scholarship eased the burden carried by my family and allowed me to pursue quality education without constantly worrying about the challenges that often accompany it. Going to college to become a nurse was a dream I held onto tightly, even when the odds felt stacked against me. Growing up, I knew that education would be the key to helping my family and giving back to my community. It was year 2021, in the middle of the pandemic, when I took the Electrical Engineering course at Bulacan State University. I waited for the slots for BulSU to open, I was lucky enough to have free tuition thanks to UniFAST Free Higher Education. Being a SUNLAD scholar made me more confident thanks to their financial aid, as I won't worry as much on school projects and
transportation, even food. I had to keep my part by sending monthly reports every end of the month. I am thankful to be a SUNLAD scholar. Their kind gesture eased the burden on my
family. I promise to live up to my potential and live up to the core values of the foundation.

As I considered my collegiate career route, the anxiety and apprehension that frequently followed such a crucial choice weighed heavily on me.
